CELEBRATION OF THE 27TH EDITION OF THE INTERNATIONAL DAY OF OLDER PERSONS IN CAMEROON AT RECEWAPEC HEADQUARTERS

This years’ commemoration of the 27th Edition of the International Day of Older Persons was a special edition as it could still be observed in spite of the prevailing circumstances of the socio-political atmosphere of the Northwest and Southwest Regions of Cameroon. This year’s commemoration on the theme: “stepping into the future: tapping the talents, contributions and participation of older persons in society” was commemorated on October 6, 2017 at the REGIONAL CENTER FOR THE WELFARE OF AGEING PERSONS IN CAMEROON (RECEWAPEC) headquarter at Bambui –Fonta Road, Bamenda, Northwest, Cameroon, under the hostesses of the REGIONAL DELEGATION OF SOCIAL
AFFAIRS (RDSA) in collaboration with the REGIONAL DELEGATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH (RDPH) for the Northwest Region (NWR). The theme this year is rooted in the priority axis No2 of the Document on the National Policy for the Protection and Promotion of Older Persons that is; Participation of Older Persons in the development process and social life. It aims at arousing the interest of Governments, actors of the private sector, international organizations and the civil society to tap from the competence and immense potential of seniors in the construction
of our society. It is to set as priority the question of valorization of older persons through promotion and capitalization in three stages:
▪ The knowledge: accumulated knowledge and experiences of living years, failures and successes;
▪ Know-how: acquired in different apprenticeship domains, socioeconomic and cultural life, aptitudes and expertise;
▪ Self-management skills: build on interpersonal relationships, relation with life and the world, attitudes and behavior reflections.
The commemoration had as general objective: to valorize the experiences of older persons and take into consideration their contributions for their full participation in the social life and development process.

We’ve been working with and for old age people throughout Cameroon since 1996 as RECEHWEDEV and from 2001 as RECEWAPEC, helping aged persons, especially the poor and vulnerable to cope with crises and shocks, get favorable laws enacted to improve on their well being, invest in their productivity and health to living an active aging life.
